Investing in Tomorrow’s Workforce
Now more than ever, business leaders need to be creative in addressing workforce issues and workforce development. Job shadows, mentoring and internships not only offer excellent experiences for students but offer a great way to prepare them for industry. Together we can align efforts to help students reach proficiency by designing skills and knowledge they need to be successful in the workplace. Businesses can provide resources that help schools educate students and faculty more effectively. Partnering with education is an investment in what Philadelphia Academies, Inc. refers to as the “triple bottom line”: students, the future workforce, and the community at large. Specifically, industry sites can utilize these partnerships as a way to extend resources and to expand access to new pools of talent. Partnerships with education bring new ideas and new energy to schools and to business partners alike, facilitating positive and open communication between the academic community and the business community for the benefit of our future workforce. When graduation rates are up and a growing number of well-prepared students enter the workforce after high school or college, the community benefits in several ways. The ratio of productive, tax-paying citizens increases, and an improved quality of life follows.
